The Town of Clinton officially was formed as its own town in 1865 although the town existed long before as a milling town. After originally being known as Hunt's Mill, in 1829 it was named for DeWitt Clinton, a governor of New York who sponsored the Erie Canal. During the Revolutionary War, Clinton was a Patriot-oriented town and is believed to have been the first town in New Jersey to organize a regiment of minutemen.
